Fav Writing Books
By no means exhaustive, please let me know if you come across any you have found useful.
Hooked by Les Edgerton
Write fiction that grabs readers at page one and never lets them go. A seriously useful read on the things to focus on in your opening line, page & chapter, with some great examples to show you exactly how to do it. (See this writing lark is dead easy really, you just need a good book)
Wannabe a Writer - Jane Wenham-Jones
Essential reading if you're even considering taking up writing seriously or not so seriously. With excellent tips on how to take rejection, how not to let your bottom spread to much in the writing chair and other gmes
Writer and Artists Yearbook
Invaluable reference source for once you've completed that all important MS. It also contains lots of useful articles from the coalface. It really is the writers' bible.
Websites
Short Story Radio www.shortstoryradio.com
Not just because there's one of my stories on here but because Ian the guy that runs the site is really passionate about short stories and the spoken word and has done a lot to support and promote short stories. Also, ace writer Sue Moorcroft has several stories on there (and if you like those you must read her full length novels Starting Over and All that Mullarkey).
Verulam Writers Circle www.verulamwriterscircle.org.uk
They run the annual Get Writers Conference which is a must attend if you want to learn more about writing and the publishing industry. They meet regularly, have lots of published writers and hold honest manuscript evenings.
Romantic Novelists Association www.rna-uk.org
50 years old this year, this venerable insitituion is totally and utterly fab, probably why the book covering its history is called Fab at Fifty. It is the only writing organisation that actively promotes and supports unpublished writers with its wonderful New Writers Scheme.
