Read and Learn: Lessons from the page

Universal advice to would-be writers is read, read and read some more.  You can learn a lot from other writers and here I'm hoping to highlight what I've got out of the books I'm reading rather than a straight review - more of a writers approach to reading.

RNA Party

Posted on 8:39am Friday 19th Nov 2010
Yes I was there. My first RNA party and it was fab.  I've been a member of the Romantic Novelists Association New Writers Scheme for the last 3 years and thanks to Twitter, I finally summoned up the courage to go to one of their parties.

Its always daunting to walk into a room full of people, a) that you don't know and b) that are fully fledged published authors.  So knowing that there a gang of virtual mates from Twitter made it so much easier and all the more exciting.

I came up with a neat analogy to explain my excitemen to the husb who was looking pained every time I skipped.  It was the equivalent of going to a party with the Arsenal first team and knowing that Arsene Wenger and Cesc Fabregas would be there.  Even he got excited at that point.

So back to the party.  Lovely lovely lovely. Met old and new friends and can't wait for the next one.  This particular party in the RNA's fiftieth anniversary year celebrated the New Writers Scheme.  If you're a budding writer and not heard of this, you are missing out.  Oh you do have to write romance, that helps.

For a very minimal sum, you can join the RNA for a year, submit a manuscript for a critique by one of the NWS team of readers and go to the RNA events for the year.  This scheme is unique in the writing world and just shows what a generous and giving lot romantic writers are.   Sadly I didn't take any pictures (too busy enjoying myself) but do check out the RNA blog.
